TIP: If you're an home heating oil user, call your supplier and ask for "Low Sulfur" heating oil with less than 500ppm (or lower) sulfur content. Home heating oil is actually high sulfur diesel fuel with red dye in it, and contains many nasty pollutants including sulfur dioxide and, mercury. In Massachusetts, Sulfur in standard heating oil can be as much as 3000 ppm. Buring it at this level causes high particulate emissions that lead to asthma and even higher cancer rates. A low sulfur blend cuts emissions, and also maintenance on your unit (sulfur clogs heat exchangers and must be removed each year..thus your "annual cleaning"). All Massachusetts oil dealers will be required to blend 2% biofuel into their products effective this heating season. Even though the Biofuel helps cut some emissions slightly, you are still burning high sulfur "dirty" diesel fuel basically, and still emitting a lot of Co2, Sulfur Dioxide, and other nasty pollutants. A blend of 2% biofuel and low sulfur or ultra low sulfur diesel fuel (heating oil) has been shown in lab tests by the National Oil Heat research Council to cut ALL emissions (including Co2, sulfur dioxide, and mercury, plus a lot of other nasty things. Call your oil dealer and ask for low sulfur or ultra low sulfur fuels and if possible a blend of low sulfur fuel with 2% or 5% biofuel. You'll be greening your heating for the cost of a few pennies per gallon, cutting maintenance on your unit in half, and most importantly cutting pollutants from the atmosphere.
